I liked the lesson plan ideas that were posted on the site. I think that the one with the "pizza slice" chart is an interesting way to do a visual presentation for kids.

What one thing did you learn, and what will you do differently as a result?

I think that it is important to treat the person as a person first, and the disability second. The video of the able bodied man going to the job interview was the most powerful thing in this course.

2. Do you plan to recommend this tutorial? If so, please elaborate.

Not really, I might have people watch the video but would not have them do the rest. I would recommend a couple of the sites but they can be found without having to tdo all this.

3. Do you plan to read or recommend some of the Recommended Reading books or add them to your collection? Will you link our LibraryThing list to your blog? If you have a book recommendation or have read one of the books that does not include a review, please send us your own review so we can share it.

I think I will check out a couple of them and see what they are like. LibraryThing connected.

The video was embarrassing to watch. I expected that it might show people being cruel but instead they were overly nice. I can only imagine how tiring it must be for a person with a disability.

The quiz was good - I am happy to report that I got an A. I did miss a few and I think it was informative to read all the rationale, even on those I was correct on.

This is an area that I feel I have been on the fringe of my whole life. My mom is a special ed teacher and I have grown up around her students. I think it was good for me to be introduced at an early age, as I feel more comfortable than I might otherwise around people with disabilities.

Developing an assistive tech plan for the library can include many simple to some really elaborate solutions. Some of the simple things that could be included would be eBooks available in titles that are studied in class. The books would be helpful for those who have reading delays. There could also be some titles in large print for those with vision issues. There could also be a magnifier that plugs into a pc that will enlarge any book in the library so those with vision impairments can read any book in the library not just large print.

Further specific tech can be for a mobility impared was mentioned in my previous post. Additionally, some software choices are listed below:

Dragon Naturally Speaking Pro. This is a voice recognition software that will allow our student to dictate directly to her computer. It will type what she says and recognizes voice commands so she can also navigate the computer. It is compatible with the voice recorder and headset that were part of the hardware choices. She will not have to use her hands for anything and the software will allow her to be independent from others to perform basic computer functions.

SofType. This software emulates a standard mouse allowing her to further control the keyboard. It is compatible with the Headmouse extreme that was also one of the hardware choices. She will be able to control the mouse on the screen just by moving her head and the software recognizes the motion. This is yet another way to unlink her from dependence.

Mathtalk with Science Notebook. This is a software that goes with the other voice recognition but is geared specifically toward math and science formulas and specialized vocabulary. This will be helpful for her with all of the specific equations that need to be used in math and science classes. This enables the software to learn equations that she puts in for easy recall so she won’t have to dictate the formulas each time she wants to use them.

Discovery Exercises:

Browse through online sites like EnableMart and discover other types of assistive technology solutions. Write an entry in your journal or post to your blog about solutions that would be useful additions at your school or workplace.

We have a student who was in a car accident last year. She is in a wheelchair and unable to move. After a year she is able to move her wheelchair using a straw to blow in and is sometimes able to use her hand to move the chair. She does have the ability to move her head freely so a computer addition that tracks head movements would work really well for her. In addition, she is an avid reader, so I think that some audiobooks or ebooks would be good for her. I would get her a set of headphones which cancel noise to go with voice recognition software. There are also voice recorders that are compatable with the software.

Discover how to implement simple accommodations in various situations. Write about three (3) such situations and how you might change the environment to assist your student or co-worker.

After looking at all the devices out there, there are lots of simple ones that can be used. For a student with impaired vision, there is a desktop magnifier that plugs right into the usb port of a laptop enableig them to read anything. There are also microphones for use with students with hearing difficulties, the teacher speaks normally with the mic around their neck and the student receives the amplified sound. None of the other students are effected. There are keyboards with larger keys and programmable keys to help students with limited control of their hands.

Write a needs assessment and justification for hardware that would be suitable for use in your Library or Classroom. Include it in your school or district technology plan.

Identified Student:

We have a high school student who was in a car crash last year. She is now a quadriplegic and is returning to school. She has extremely limited movement in her right arm/hand and can somewhat use it to guide her motorized wheelchair. She generally uses a blow straw to get around because she has greater control. She has no learning disabilities, just physical obstacles.

Identified Needs:

She will need assistive technology so that she can take notes in class, search the web, write papers and do her homework. With assistive technology she will be able to do many of the above activities herself which will give her greater independence. Currently she has to dictate to another person and they do the typing. She will be able to do her own work at home and at school with the identified tools. She will be able to communicate with others via computer.

She is also going to need to do readings which she will be able to access on the computer instead of having someone hold a book and turn the pages for her. Her textbook readings can be scanned using a high resolution scanner the library already owns. In addition, she can access ebooks from the library.

Justification:

This voice recorder will enable her to dictate notes for papers, homework, etc. at home. It is fully compatible with the Dragon line of software which will translate voice to print. This will give her the freedom to do some of her work even when she is not hooked up to a computer. Justification:

Student has good control of her head and can move it freely and with enough control that she should be able to use head movements to control the mouse. This devise is not obtrusive and unlike a giant pointer stick strapped to her head to push big keys on a keyboard, will allow her to work amongst her peers with a minimum of obvious adaptations. It is a piece of technology that will take some training for her to use efficiently but will allow her to control the keyboard on her own. It is an expensive piece of equipment at $979 but allows a lot of flexibility in use by our student.

These devices were all through EnableMart.com. I liked the site as it was easy to navigate and well organized. It also allows schools to purchase equipment without having to purchase through the internet, which is strictly taboo in our district.

I thought that EnableMart.com was really helpful. It was organized by population which made it easy to find materials instead of sifting through masses of information. It also put devices that complement one another on the right sidebar so it was easy to put together devices that would work together.

5. What are your thoughts about the different types of hardware. Comment on each on your blog or in your journal.

I don’t know why but I was amazed by the different types of assistive technology hardware out there. I was also surprised by the costs of various devices. For example, a large and bulky machine that does nothing but hold and turn pages of a book is over $5000 while a scanner that scans a page and then reads it to you costs less than $1000. Somehow, it seems that the price tags were reversed.

This was in interesting module. I thought it was interesting that they used the celebrity thing with disabilities to get peoples interest. Clever.

Discovery exercise #1. How would I teach a blind student and how would I teach sighted students braille? Well, I read over the lessons that they had at the website and I thought some of them were very clever. In particular, I thought the teaching of the phases of the moon was outstanding. It would be highly useful for both sighted an unsighted students. I did not find anything on teaching sighted students braille. There were two links but the one was to a package that you could buy and the other did not work an redirected you back to the original site. I am not really sure how I would go about teaching anyone of any sight ability how to read braille.

In a library, it would obviously by important to be able to provide the materials needed if you were to have a blind student. Is there a ILL for braille materials to get what you would need when you need it because I think you would fiscally only be able to provide what is needed when it is asked for. Audiobooks are obviously a good way to go too.

Discovery exercise #2. Looking at teaching strategies for the classroom. There are tons of different things listed for LD on the website that we were directed to. I don't think it is very productive to list one thing that I can do for all students because they are all different and require individual accommodations according to their needs. I think that the best thing that I can tell myself in general is that the accommodations that I need to make are not to be confused with dumbing down material to get them through. As the website said, it is meant to "level the playing field." A LD does not mean that the student is any less intelligent than their peers, they just learn differently and we need to make sure we are providing the information to all.

Well, in my frustration, I neglected to mention which podcasts I was trying to add the rss feed to the blog. One was on podcast.com and was a teen update from a library. I thought it might be a good model for a school library. The other was on podcastalley.com and was called librarygeek. It was a forum for librarians to leave comments.

Week 9, thing #23

We made it to the end. Woo-hoo! This course has been really interesting. I learned a lot and found the majority of the Things to be useful for my classroom. I think that there were lots of good things that I needed to be exposed to to help me be prepared to teach the techno generation that is filling up the seats of my classroom. Too bad Rollyo is so slow, I would really like to use that one more.

What were your favorite discoveries or exercises on this learning journey? I think that some of my favorite activites were the blog, LibraryThing and the photo sites. There were some fun mash-up sites.
How has this program assisted or affected your lifelong learning goals? I think that it has opened up my eyes to ways of using technology in the classroom that I hadn't thought of before. I think that I immediately dismissed most tools as useless for education because I didn't understand them. It is good that I was forced to try them and there were lots of ideas for you about how to use in the library or the classroom. I have always prided myself on being open minded but this was a wake up call that I was closed to technology beyond the basics.
Were there any take-a-ways or unexpected outcomes from this program that surprised you? I think that I will be using a lot of things that I learned in this program in my classroom. That in itself is surprising given my previous attitude toward technology.
What could we do differently to improve upon this program’s format or concept? I might rearrange the things a bit so that some of the weeks are not as lopsided as others. It seemed that some weeks took a lot longer than others to do. Evening them out would be helpful.
If we offered another discovery program like this in the future, would you choose to participate? If so, check outDiscovering Assistive Technology. I think I might.
How would you describe your learning experience in ONE WORD or in ONE SENTENCE, so we could use your words to promote Classroom Learning 2.0 learning activities? It was an eyeopening experience that exposed me to many new technologies that I can immediately use and put into action in my classroom.

Pod casts are interesting. I have listened to some before. My husband uses them in his classroom. I listened to several but will admit that I could not figure out the RSS feed. After spending over an hour and getting rather frustrated, I gave it up. Sorry.

Podcasts have tremendous potential in the classroom and beyond. I think they are only limited by the imagination of the person using them.

You Tube is fun. You can waste a lot of time watching dumb videos but there are some that are fun. I have to say I really enjoyed the first video that we were to watch about the medieval help desk. It was in Norwegian which I speak so that was fun. It isn't very often that you come across Norwegian videos. It was also really funny.

I did a search for library and for librarian. Some of my hits were good, some not so good. I liked two especially. The Adventures of Super Librarian was cute, obviously a commercial for the library which shows good use of YouTube to promote your library. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Bu-TijjVs_g&feature=related

The other that I liked was OVERDUE - the library doo-wap number. It was a group of singing librarians that used the song to humorously bring in the effect of the patriot act on librarianship.

There are lots of ways that you could use YouTube in the library. You could make a video of where to find things in the library, a group project to make a movie about one of the features of the library, skits about new books to get kids to want to read them. There are only limits on the imagination, and, oh yeah, YouTube is blocked at my school.

Library Thing is cool. This has so many possibilities! I can see my husband, who feels the need to digitalize everything, putting in our entire library collection.

I can definitely envision educational uses for this. It could be a forum for a book club or an English class. You could have students put in their favoriate books and find who has similar tastes in books to recommend to each other.

ZOHO WRITER

This seems very similar to Google Docs which I have used before. I am really not sure what the differences may be. I have used Google Docs in the past. My partner and I used it for a group project since we are in different parts of the country, we were able to work on the project without emailing back and forth.

My husband and I have the privledge to teach in the same district and we work together on a movie project with students. We were able to have the script writing team use google docs. We could oversee and the students could all access whenever they had a chance and all be up to date.

I think that this applicaiton would be ridicuously usefull to a small business or even a large on, especially with the tag folders option. There would be no need for a local network for document storage or sharing, you would only need internet access.

In a classroom, the ability to do group work as mentioned above is greatly enhansed. Also, the need for a flash drive or disk is reduced.

I will be attempting to post this document to my blog.

My Web Quest is for art history. I want the students to do some investigation into how things were done in the middle ages. What was it like to be an artist in the medieval time period? What materials did the work with and where did they get them? How did they make things? All these questions and more are for the students to investigate and present at the conclusion of the Web Quest. It is entitled How's They Do That?

I am not a librarian and did not collaborate with another teacher. I am a classroom teacher (high school art) and decided to do my web quest on something I can immediately do with my students.

The wiki sandbox was not my favorite, I will be honest about it. I guess I am just not really seeing the difference between a sandbox and any other wiki. I went to the classroom connections wiki sandbox and scrolled down through. It seems very disconnected. Aside from everyone in this class posting their webquest, it has a story about cats and dogs. I guess I do not really get the point.

I can see the use of a wiki as a virtual discussion or a place to post links and information you want a group of people to use. It could be for a book club or a gaming group or a bunch of people trying to connect on a specific topic. It could be a way for a class to work collaboratively to write about a topic and post findings so that the group can edit. The classroom uses for a wiki are only bounded by the people in the classroom. It is sad that wikis are absolutely blocked at my school.

Well, I found with this tool exploration as I have with several others, I can get lost in all the information that is out there. By that I mean, I click on one interesting thing, just to click on another and another and before I know it, I have lost track of where I started and why. There are so many ways that this could be used in the classroom and not just in the library. I can see lots of cool ways to use a wiki as a reading group and never actually have to meet face to face. The Princeton library was a cool example of that. Members posted reviews of books which were organized by category.

I also liked the blog that was done in the school. Anyone could read it but only the teacher and here students could post to it. They kept track of good wikis about technology and made their own wikis about technology. awesome.

The other one that was a hub of articles about all things library was really cool too. I liked that anyone could post. What a powerful tool to have at your fingertips! Why reinvent the wheel all the time, learn from others experiences and modify and adapt to the situation you are in. Do what you are able to do.

All of these wikis strike me on one thing. If say, I wanted to find talk to another librarian to try to start a particular program in my library, lets say a gaming program, but I don't know any other librarians that are currently doing that, what do I do. Find a wiki about it. It provides instant connections with people who you would probably never come across otherwise because it is just regular people putting out what they have done. It is not necessarily "published" but it is none the less available. What an amazing tool!

Copyright. What a sticky subject. The video was cute but after a minute or two gave me a headache. I actually closed my eyes and just listened. I know as a teacher, I copy all kinds of stuff for the classroom. I appreciate when I grab things from the web if they have the little disclaimer at the bottom that they may be used for educational purposes though that is not always spelled out.

Creative commons was an interesting video as well. I think it is important for students to understand the idea of sharing and the rights that they have to their own work. They "borrow" stuff all the time and I feel that most of them have very little idea what the term copyright even means. An example would be in my art classroom when a student wants to bring in a logo or a picture of Nemo and make it into a stained glass window. When I try to explain that it is a copyrighted design and they need to make their own version, they think I am crazy. Some really interesting "discussions" have ensued.

I read the five perspctives and the one that struck me the most was from Michael Stevens, "Librarian 2.0 gets content This librarian understands that the future of libraries will be guided by how users access, consume and create content. Content is a conversation as well and librarians should participate. Users will create their own mash ups, remixes and original expressions and should be able to do so at the library or via the library’s resources. This librarian will help users become their own programming director for all of the content available to them."

As a teacher in a public school, not yet a librarian, I think that this idea will be the hardest to sell. In many ways, the educators hands are tied by the "safeguards" that are installed for the students. At my school, which I think is pretty typical, there are so many things that are blocked when using the web, it makes it almost laughable that the school claims it uses technology. We can not use or access any blogs or wikis, there are many companies that are blocked, cell phones are forbidden as are mp3 players or ipods. That pretty much eliminates a great deal of the 2.0 tools that are out there. The entire educational community needs to wrap its head around the ways that kids today function. I feel that schools are on an entirely different operating system from the students. We are becoming a foreign land to them and if we don't start adapting to the tools that they use and the way that they seek and process information, we are going to loose them. This is true for the library, the social studies department, science, English, just about everyone. We need to embrase, not block the 2.0 world and find a way to punish those individuals that abuse the tools, instead of locking everyone out.

Just my two cents worth.

Technorati must be a serious bloggers dream site! It was fun to poke around in the site. I can see how you could get totally lost in the site. I started to get really sidetracked from what I originally was looking for. I did register my blog so I guess I am now official. With the tagging, you can really direct specific users to your site and help to filter out the people who might come across it accidentally.

There are lots of uses you could put this too in a library setting. You can use it to set up a page of useful library informational blogs. Because there are so many ways to track the blogs, almost any teacher could use this tool in their classroom. You could help an English teacher have her students find and track blogs of authors. You could help the art teacher follow the current art scene with blogs on artists or musuem exhibits. I'm pretty sure you could use Technorati in just about any subject area.

Finally a thing that I have used before! My husband uses del.icio.us and got me into it. He even uses it in his classroom. He has a set of laptops for all the students to work online at once. They are all connected on delicious and when he or one of his students find a good site to use for their porjects they bookmark it on delicious. I don't have a set of laptops in my classroom but I do use delicious for myself. That way I can access the same stuff from home and school.

I have not looked at other sites. I will be adding the RSS feed from the SJLibraries delicious page so I can keep up to date. It was interesting to see which articles were viewed the most and how they were variously tagged by others.

My list is of sites, mostly museums, that can access medieval art. I am hoping to use this eventually in helping my students find out how medieval art was made.

I had a lot of difficulty with this site. I think that the concept is great but I do not really think that the site is very easy to use because of how long it takes to load anything. Personally, I'd move on and try to find a site that is quicker to use. I just don't have the time to wait for this to load and half the time it doesn't work. I had to try to register twice and then it would not take my sites the first time either. To get to my list, I had to try three times, I kept getting a weird connection message. Hopefully, it will be accessible to those who wish to view/use it.

I joined Ning and set up a site for the club that I am hosting at my high school. I was pleased with the way that I could add a lot of personalized information to the new network I had created. I was able to add privacy settings so that only members can view the network. I think this is important to protect the privacy of my students in this area of creepy cyber predators. I was able to add events and photos. I will add the students to the blog. I posted guidlines for the posts by the students and was even able to set it up so that I have to approve new posts before they show up to the rest of the members of the club.

The one thing that was frustrating me is that Ning is using my first name to sign all of my posts and activities and I would prefer to keep it more professional and have them all from "Mrs. Elford" but haven't been able to get that to change. If anyone knows how, please let me know. Thanks. I am looking forward to checking other people's posts to see what 2.0 tools they explored.

It worked! Sorry guys, my seven year old son chose the photo. I can see a lot of fun coming from this sort of site. I did try several things. I just find it amazing all the cool doo-dads that are out there to play with. I could use this sort of site in my art class to try to get the kids to do some collages with the site. It could be really interesting. I will have to see if this site is blocked at my school. Hopefully not, at least one of these will hopefully be available.

Of the tools mentioned in the directions, I found edublog to be right on topic for what we are searching for. When I googled Feedster, I just got hits about how feedster is dead so I'm not sure I got that one right. Topix.com was ok. I liked that it gave you local news. That could be helpful. I think that the best way to find feeds is probably to go to some of the websites that I like and check on them as well as recommendations from colleagues. There are so many out there, I'm not sure that the links to just find rss feeds are really filtering the good from the bad. Maybe they are and I'm just not getting it. I will keep looking.

Well, the RSS feed is also totally new to me. I have mixed feelings about this. I think it will be a great tool to connect me to sites that will be useful and save time by not having to go to many different sites but am worried about how much time it will take to go through the information. I can see where one would really have to tweek the sites to get the balance between what you need and too much information. In conjunction with this, I accidentally found out how to use the blogs between classmates better. I thought I would add some of you to the rss feed because I have been going back to the discussion board and linking to your blogs that way each time. I just figured out how to be a follower. I think that will help me visit more of your blogs.

I can see how this could be really a useful tool, regardless of subject, in the classroom. Connecting the classroom and the rss feeds to follow the class blog or a related site could be a quick way for students to connect for projects.

OK, so my husband and I got iphones about a month ago. They are crazy awesome. There are some really useful tools and then there are some that are just a ridiculously mindblowing use of technology that serves no real purpose other than to make you go wow. The app I am thinking of is called Ocarina. You blow into it and push buttons to make music. Then you can allow it to know your location. You hit on a little world button and it shows and plays the music that other people are playing right now on a rotating map/globe of the world. Crazyness.

Well, that was fun, I just made some trading cards and a movie poster at the FD Toys site. You could really have some fun with that and make some interesting and personalized gifts. Not to mention the educational applications. I tried the mosiac thing, montagr, but was not able to figure that one out. I will try it again later after I have uploaded more photos to flickr so that I can use my own.

Well as you can see below, I started to explore Flickr. I did the tour, created an account and sent a video from my iphone. I then posted to my blog from Flickr. Woo-hooo. Look at me go!

I will admit, I was ready to say forget this avatar and move on. I installed an adobe and a java update and it was still freezing on me. It worked on what I promised myself would be the last try. I guess it just works better under pressure! How do you like my avatar? Kinda cool methinks.

Week 2, thing #3, avatars not working

Ok, this was easy up until now. Each time I go to yahoo to make an avatar, my computer freezes. I can log in but once I start to create the avatar, it completely freezes up. I have tried this twice, I am hoping third time is a charm...
